Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

Here at Silkmore Primary Academy, we aim to provide first class learning and enriching opportunities for all our children. Therefore, all our mini-missions aim to promote and cultivate a desire to learn and thrive within the safety of our own Y6 bubble.  We aim to equip our children with the life-long skills they need for a successful future life, career and their next step into secondary school.

Class Ethos

In Year 6, we aim to provide creative and challenging learning which inspires future thinkers, innovators and problem solvers. We work hard to develop our ambition, determination and the skills to become life-long learners. Together, we work to grow into positive, responsible individuals, who can work well as a team, showing great morals and consideration for others. In order to do this, we aim to foster a supportive environment where we know that failure is the first attempt in learning and can develop our resilience and perseverance in order to progress.

Routines & Notices

PE

PE sessions are on a Tuesday afternoon and may be completed outside so tracksuits and trainers are advised. Earrings must not be worn for PE. 

Homework
Year 6 will have a spelling test on a Friday which will test 10 spellings each week. These will be sent home via email on a Friday to be practised over the weekend for the following week’s test.

School reading books will be taken home on Fridays to be returned the following Thursday. Reading, and fostering a love of reading, is central to a child’s education and curriculum so we expect all children to read daily. A range of ebooks are available via your child’s class login on Oxford Owl to further extend the range of books they can access at home.

Mini-Missions

Our first mini mission of the year was Shrek. We returned after our summer break to the magical world of far, far away. We revisited different phrases and figurative language in order to write a terrifying setting description of Fiona’s castle and the first sight of the dragon. Alongside this, we developed our geographical skills through exploring maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe their features.

Our second mini mission of the year was all about light. We had a box arrive on the first day filled with a periscope making kit and a letter from an MI5 agent who asked him to help him with his missions. The first mission involved us writing an explanation text about how periscopes work in order to help him to travel in his submarine. We made a periscope to send, along with our explanation text, and created an explanation video to accompany it. The second mission involved us having a design our own scientific experiment to explore the effect of adding batteries and light bulbs into a circuit. We built upon our scientific understanding of light, asked scientific questions and developed our understanding of carrying out scientific explanations. Year 6 have worked very hard to complete all the missions.

 

Our first mini mission after half term will involve a real-life context where we will use our knowledge of local and physical geography to create a meaningful, persuasive piece of writing in order to inspire and persuade our audience. We will develop our grammatical skills in order to write effectively for our audience with the correct level of formality.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Year 6 will then step into a magical world filled with awe and wonder. This mini mission will be based on a book full of beautiful images, excitement, suspense and wonder. We will be spending three weeks focusing on interweaving character, setting and plot and creating atmosphere to write our own narrative based on the same characters. To accompany our writing, we are creating the artwork in a similar style to the original and adding a collage of materials to add texture. 

 

Spring Term 

Year 6 will spend the term developing their historical skills by analysing sources in order to find out more about a specific period in history whilst considering the reliability of each source. Whilst immersed in this period of history, they will be sent on an adventure through the ages filled with excitement and suspense as a mystery figure risks it all to find the treasure. Year 6 will write their own adventure narrative, creating their own adventure with risks, dangers and oozing with suspense and tension.

 

Year 6 will then be immersed in a range of science, geography and history mini missions where they will compare different periods in history; they will develop their scientific investigation design skills by focussing on controlling variables and they will compare and contrast landscapes.

 

Summer Term

Year 6 will continue to enhance their knowledge of history, design and technology and science. A key focus for the start of this term will be diversity and learning about key significant figures from different backgrounds. In D&T, they will have the excitement of being able to design and create their own product whilst learning the skills of innovation and the skills of creating a new product. Our final mission will apply our knowledge of writing to a new skill of poetic writing.

 

 

Maths

In Year 6, we focus on developing mathematicians who have a deep understanding of the mathematical concepts alongside their reasoning and problem solving skills. We focus on developing the children’s love of learning and thirst for a challenge in order for them the take autonomy over their own learning and progress. As much as possible; maths is linked to real life contexts to ensure the purpose for learning the skills is clear. Beginning with place value, we move on to the four operations, fractions, decimals and percentages and then on to statistics, shape, algebra and measurement. We ensure to constantly revisit previously taught concepts in order to embed them in and build upon our understandings as the year progresses.
